Project Pool in Peril? Hardly.

The salt-finish deck is stained and the homeowners have been swimming and enjoying their new pool for weeks now.

Project Party in Peril? Not really, but it's down to the wire. Invitations went out weeks ago, the party's next weekend and the new pool room is still unfinished.

Accents of Salado is thanking its sources that all the furniture is here and we've already been able to place some of the the outside pieces.

Like many homeowners, last minute additions to the project leave them wondering if the professionals can meet their needs. After weeks of 100+ temperatures in Texas, mom and dad decided they needed an air conditioned pool room if they were going to enjoy their new outdoor addition as much as the children. Right now the new room seems to be in shambles and we may all be working in to the wee hours of the morning, but the professionals on this project are all determined that everything will be in place for Saturday's party. Wait until you see the finished project.

A Mediterranean Style Pool Project

The pool project is now at the pool deck stage. Pool deck options are unlimited, but these homeowners are most interested in a surface that is safe, user-friendly and inexpensive, but at the same time, one that is attractive and complimentary to the pool area. Another consideration is the style of the home. For a Mediterranean style home, a rustic textured finish is highly desirable. They're going with salt-finished concrete.

CREATING A SALT-FINISH POOL DECK
Salt-finished concrete is an inexpensive way to dress up the pool. The job's first few steps in creating a salt-finish pool deck are the same as they are for any concrete slab. Concrete professionals set concrete forms and install reinforcing material.

Once the pool deck is formed and reinforced, professionals pour the concrete and then finish the concrete. When the concrete is firm but not completely set, coarse rock salt is broadcast over the surface. The salt is partially embedded by tamping down with a magnesium float or using a roller to press in the salt.

The salt is allowed to stay on the deck overnight and the pool deck is cleaned the following day with a pressure-washer. The water dissolves the salt, leaving a series of irregular dimples where the salt crystals had been.

The random indentations produced by this process create a non-slip surface with a weathered and textured Mediterranean look.

You may be thinking that our title, Ignoring Scale, suggests you'll be reading ideas about how to avoid the bathroom scale. Decorating ideas and those pesky little pounds have more in common than you may think. Burning calories happens naturally when you really get going on a decorating project. Employing the following decorating ideas requires some up-and-down ladder work that could produce dual results . . a great looking kitchen and great looking legs.

IGNORING SCALE is one of the top ten decorating mistakes. When decorating a room measure your space and decorate it accordingly. Choose decorative decor and furnishings for that room that are in scale with the size of the room.

DECORATING LARGE SCALE KITCHENS
In kitchens with high ceilings and tall walls there is a lot of room above eye level. Today's kitchen is a spacious room and, more times than not, the ceiling is tall. Many modern kitchens have vaulted or tray ceilings. Many have exquisite architectural features. Showcasing tall walls, unique ceilings and architectural focal points can be a decorating challenge.

Emphasis in interior design is about enhancing or creating a focal point in the room. The focal point of any room is like the exclamation point at the end of a well-worded sentence. A successful focal point is appropriate for the scale of the room and it immediately draws the eye.

In the modern kitchen pictured here, the tray ceiling and the large vented hood above the cook top are the predominate features in the room. They are focal points. The scrolled iron wall grille, inset in the stucco-finished hood, emphasizes this architectural element, draws the eye and, equally important, the grille breaks up a large expansive space. It gives the hood more definition.

There is ample space above the cabinets to decorate with large baskets, urns and bowls. Scale has not been ignored. Accessories are large enough to be seen and their size demands attention.

Get the ladder out of the garage and go decorate! Your legs may complain at first, but they will love you later. And you will love them.

HARMONY IN ROOM COLOR CHOICES
Choosing colors that go together is a hallmark of good design. Have you ever vacationed in the tropics and find yourself enamored with the slow pace, the exotic architecture and the bright vivid color that engulfs your psyche? Suddenly you find yourself purchasing a souvenir decorative accessory for your home washed in the brilliant colors surrounding you. When you return home you are confronted with the reality that there is not one room in your home where that vase, wall hanging or colorful throw is accepted by the room design color theme that you have created. I've come to the conclusion, after repeatedly making this mistake, that people decorate with the colors that surround them. If you don't live in the tropics then you probably are not decorating your home with cool tropical color.

In the two images to the right, are bedrooms that are both pleasing to the eye. However the furnishings could never be combined. The warm, golden theme of the top bedroom could not accept the gorgeous cool blue chase. When shopping for furniture, the homeowner often finds an exceptional piece of furniture that they love and have to have. The chase in definitely appealing with its divine royal blue upholstery, but it demands a harmonious setting created just for it.

The chase would better compliment the lime green bedroom seen left than complimenting the warm gold-tone bedroom pictured above. Royal blue and lime green are tropical colors.

They go together.

As seen in the white chair image, royal blue, lime green, vivid pink and bright white are harmonious colors. Replace the white sheers covering the window in the lime green bedroom, with the floral drapery shown in the white chair image, and the blue chase fits right in.

THE MORAL TO THIS DECORATING STORY
If your home is designed with warm earth tone colors, don't buy the metal art gecko to display on your coffee table. Just buy it because you love it. It will make you happy every time you pull it out of the drawer.

Nourishing the Soul

I've never been much on new year resolutions, but I seem to always have a recurring thought each year and I guess there must be a reason.

As a new year rolls around I think of a fellow teacher with whom I worked for many years. Seldom in your lifetime does another's actions become engraved in your memory, but I think about this woman and I remember how renewing her spirit was high on her priority list. She was wise beyond her years and she must have known that a fresh new outlook was most important to her well-being and to the well-being of the children in her care.

Christine Taylor knew how to nourish her spirit and she did it on a regular basis. Every month, on a prominent wall beside her desk, a new work of art would appear. When I asked her about this unusual occurrence, she told me that one day she realized that she was going to be spending at least one-third of her life in this home away from home. Ms. Taylor knew that art was the mirror to one's soul and she shared her spirit and love of life each time she changed that picture on the wall. Every day she was surrounded by what she loved - children and her reminder of home.

As the owner of Accents of Salado, one of my favorite duties is the selection of new artwork. As the year winds down and we gear up for a new retail year, these new selections begin to arrive.

I love to open the boxes and see these new treasures for the first time. It's like walking into Christine Taylor's classroom and sharing with her a renewal of spirit.

Time to Set the Table

The Accents of Salado family loves the holidays. We close the Accents of Salado showroom and gather in our homes with family and friends for great food, fun and fellowship.

Setting a traditional holiday table includes choice of table linens, china and crystal. More informal holiday tables showcase a festive runner or placemats, pottery and colored glassware.

With the passing of Labor Day there is certainty that cooler days are ahead. As we relish this welcomed relief from summer temperatures we seem to find ourselves spending more time outdoors. Autumn is the perfect time of year to enjoy outdoor rooms, decks and patios.

What is Texture?

Whether decorating inside your home or designing your garden space, texture is a key element in good design. Effective use of texture gives the design oomph and without it you may be left wondering why everything seems to blend together with no real impact. In garden design, plant texture is generally considered to be the surface structure of the plant. Is the foliage fine or coarse? Does the plant appear airy or dense? Texture is influenced by the play of light on the plant as it moves across a coarse or smooth surface. Shape plays an important roll in the perception of texture. A stiff upright plant form like a yucca will appear coarser than a flexible stem fluttering in the breeze like found in muley grass. Consider plant shape for bringing texture to the garden. To create drama in the garden, use large leaf plants, such as foxglove, hydrangeas, hostas. Contrast the large leaf plants with small leaf shrubs like salvia and yaupon and stiff upright plants like sago palm.

The only difference between garden design and interior design is location. The same principles guiding the use of texture are applied. In the pictures shown here both designs are filled with texture.

The Dark Hole in the Room

When a fireplace is not being used, it can look like a dark hole from across the room. Make your fireplace an asset in your summer decorating scheme.

DECORATING BELOW THE MANTEL
In summer months you can bring visual interest to your fireplace and even maintain the warm flicker of firelight after the summer sunset. Place a rustic iron candle stand or hand crafted glass hurricanes in the firebox. My mother always placed potted ferns in her fireplace during the spring and summer and dispersed unique and varying candle holders among the flourishing greenery.

A collection of earthenware urns softened by a woven basket filled with branches, dried flowers and textural seed pods will put your room's decor in harmony with nature.

DECORATING THE MANTEL

On the adobe mantel left, the homeowner is more comfortable with less decoration on the mantel. The wall tapestry has little competition and therefore becomes the focal point of the room. No pantry? There's a solution. How about an armoire? Wall space in an adjoining breakfast nook or long wall space in the kitchen are places where a gorgeous piece of funiture can store can goods, spices and baking products. With shelves as deep as a kitchen cabinet, and maybe even deeper, an armoire is perfect for kitchen storage. An armoire with adjustable shelves allows you to customize based on your needs.

Counter Top Kitchen Canisters

Canisters not only add a decorative touch to your countertop, but they also help keep your food fresh for a longer period of time. Countertop canisters come in a variety of styles, colors and even uses. There are countertop canisters for staples such as flour and sugar, but have you considered a canister for pasta and garlic?

Countertop canisters work best when ingredients are used regularly. Nothing frees up storage space like a hanging or wall-mounted pot rack.

Pot racks are an easy way to accomplish stylish kitchen organization. A pot rack keeps your pots and pans handy for use and if you hang it above your kitchen sink, it makes cleanup simpler. Wash the frying pan. Hang it and it drains in to the sink below.

In addition to creating more storage space, a pot rack changes the look and feel of the kitchen. It becomes part of the decorating theme.

Are You Afraid to Paint the Ceiling Dark?

Darkening a ceiling actually creates a new exciting look you might have not thought possible.

Designer Christopher Lowell once said, "Painting the ceiling white is like throwing a sheet over the room." Lowell's advice has influenced every project, new or redesign, which I have attempted since hearing this advice.

Many years since hearing Lowell's recommendations, I find that all the ceilings in my home, as well as most ceilings in our home decor showrooms, are reverently painted shades darker than the wall color.

At Accents of Salado, I once papered a white showroom ceiling with an embossed tin-pattern wall paper found at home improvement stores. I painted the paper a dark, russet brown and then lightly dry-brushed the raised pattern with a copper metallic paint.

Considering our limited budget, the result was game-changing and our old tin ceiling made quite an impression with our customers. The curious crowds seemed to inquire more about the ceiling in that room as they did about the merchandise presented there.

Painting the ceiling dark is especially effective when there is abundant natural light in the room and also when the room has exceptionally high ceilings. Rooms washed with light become more intimate and comforting. A dark ceiling finished with crown molding can lower a high ceiling in an expansive foyer and raises a high ceiling in a small room like a bathroom.

Recently I met a new friend whose artistic portfolio includes a dark metallic ceiling. Pictured in this blog are images that capture some of the steps used by decorative artist, Pat Strong, to re-invent a client's great room. In shooting these photographs, Pat demonstrates how a room can be taken from ordinary to absolutely stunning.

Pat's photos allow you to see how the project began and how the artist's vision resulted in a magnificent transformation.

Pat Strong is a long time decorative painter living in Austin, Texas, but her projects find her working across the country.

Pat specializes in projects that are transformational.

Pat likes to create relationships between her clients and the architecture of their homes. Her experience and training tell her that personalizing a home with color, custom textures and custom surfaces makes it comfortable and beautiful.

Pat can transform just about any surface in a home. She specializes in murals, fine art, furniture and painted fabric.

Pat Strong works with other artists in the Austin area to produce a finished look in just about any media. No job is too large or too small for Pat if it's interesting.

Pat's Description of this Project

I love dark ceilings. I feel they can paradoxically, both raise and lower a ceiling depending on the proportions of the room and the lighting.

In this case, the ceilings were lower than the client would like and the upper floors seemed to oppress the space. Because this room was surrounded by rooms with higher ceilings, and adjacent to a deep covered patio, raising the "look" of the ceiling was out of the question. It was just too easy to compare it to the nearby areas.

By creating a warm, rich feeling on the ceiling, with a lot of detail, the room feels warm, cozy and very inviting. One completely forgets the height of the ceiling and just concentrates on a feeling of embracing shelter.

In this case, using a glimmering metallic glaze makes the room glow. In other cases, I use a deep color in an umber matte treatment to erase the awareness of where the ceiling actually occurs. Deep colored ceilings can also look infinite like a night sky.

New Earthenware at Accents of Salado

With new merchandise arriving daily, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the many tasks involved in presenting the merchandise online.

Getting just the right image is more often an accident than it is an art. Photoshop is seldom the answer. A great image is just a great image.

Accents of Salado features rustic Mediterranean furniture and accessories and this image, introducing our new Medrano vases, captures the essence of rustic Mediterranean design. The simplicity of the setting emphasizes the classic rounded shapes and the rich, earthy colors found throughout Mediterranean regions.

As I handled the Medranos, I was struck by my thoughts as I began to wonder about the artisan who had shaped these vessels. The unusual hand-painted design and the artistic graduation of earth tones caused me to ask what hands had painted these wonderful creations. I knew I was just the photographer, but these vases had evoked an appreciation that made me want to know more about them and the actual people who had proudly fashioned these works of art. I was glad that the mechanics and pressures of web site management were pushed back in my thoughts and that I found the time to enjoy this small slice of time.

I've discovered that loving what you are photographing is when you end up with one of those rare images.

MOVING INTO A NEW HOME

Two years ago this month furnishing a new home was high on my priority list. Eight months earlier a fire had left our home in ashes. All furnishings and personal belongings collected over the years were gone in just a matter of hours.

As we look back, yes, we miss the heirlooms, famliy photographs and personal items, but looking forward to a new home totally unfurnished presents its unique challenges as well. For folks who had become accustomed to the old sofa and grandma's dining room table, suddenly we were thrust into the present-day world of furniture. My, how furniture had changed. Where was the furniture made of real wood? Where was the variety?

We soon discovered that finding quality was difficult. Everything in the furniture stores seemed to be particle board, plastic and simulated, what ever that is.

It's amazing how you start paying attention when your life is touched in such a personal way. We decided right then and there that we should expand our showroom and begin the search for solid-wood furniture lines that complimented the Mediterranean style accessories in our retail store. Construction of our new showroom addition is completed and we now have double the floor space. Paint touch-ups and total showroom reorganization are on tomorrow's agenda.

In the next 60 days we will be receiving four new furniture lines. Leather is due to arrive tomorrow afternoon. Whew! That was tight scheduling.

Connie Pulled Off a Stunning Makeover

CONNIE'S MASTER BEDROOM/BATH MAKEOVER

We just received these images from our customer Connie. She has finished her master bedroom suite makeover and wanted to share this fabulous look that she created. She used several of our iron wall decor items and we think they look great!

Connie created a rustic style bedroom suite by using our Baroncelli iron curtain rod above the bed, a round iron grille to cover the 48" circular bathroom window, an Alhambra wall-mount candleholder to enhance the aqua and brown color theme and Ventana vertical side grilles to define the dressing area. Fabric, wood furniture and candles balance and soften the iron accents. Great job, Connie and thanks for sharing the images.
